Delightfully Deceitful Episodes 1-2 Recap

In episode 1, viewers are introduced to Ro-um who is serving in prison for the last 10 years, for murdering her parents. She was a child prodigy who set her home in the woods on fire to hide the lying dead bodies of her parents. Only 5 years of her sentence are left but the police are tipped with new development in the Geumsong murder case, where it was revealed that the parents were actually shot dead by another man, who might have forced teen Ro-um at gunpoint to light the fire.

On the other hand, Han Moo-young is a lawyer who suffers from excessive sympathetic syndrome, where he even feels the pain of others and gets dizzy spells. In order to keep working as a lawyer and for the well-being of his health, he only takes selective cases and maintains a cold demeanour. It was revealed that in the past, he was part of a case of an unfair workplace practice against an employee, whose family was suing the company. Despite the evidence, the company’s connections and power helped them in the case and the injustice felt almost life-threatening to Moo-young. Thus, he gives up the case and decides to seek help from a medical professional & even takes pills for it.

Now that the Geumsong murder case is opened again, the new culprit needs a lawyer and for some reason, Moo-young volunteers to take the case by making his colleague take up the case of a helpless mother, seeking justice for her dead son. However, instead of defending his client, he exposes all his conversations with him – where he confesses killing the parents for no particular reason. The recording helps Ro-um in getting out of jail sooner than expected but she finds Moo-young waiting for her outside the prison for her.

While it’s evident that Ro-um didn’t kill her parents but she isn’t exactly innocent and holds many secrets. Due to her quick and photographic memory, high intelligence and the skills she picked up over the years, she is definitely capable of committing big crimes, if not murder. Seeing how Moo-young is being so empathetic towards her, she decides to take advantage of him & appoints him as her lawyer for asking compensation for falsely imprisoning her. At first, he falls for her teary-eyed personality but soon catches her manipulative side and realises what he is dealing with.

Yet he wants to defend her, even though she might be distorting the truth in her favour. It is further shown that both of them had actually met on a TV show as a kid. Ro-um was an extraordinary kid who could tell everything about the audience member. However, when Moo-young is selected from the audience, Ro-um freezes on the spot and refuses to say anything. Confused producers take a break from filming and the two kids find each other hiding from others – where Moo-young sees the nervous, lonely and overworked side of Ro-um. From a young age, she was the breadwinner of her family and had to do everything instructed to her, instead of being a regular child.

Keeping the same memory in mind, Moo-young seems to feel the same empathy for the adult Ro-um, who has many secrets up her sleeve and is not the same nervous kid. She is a mystery as there are no public records about her early life and the only thing known about her is that she was a part of the foundation for special kids like her and something might have happened there.

Another variable in the equation is the Probation officer Ko Yo-han, who seems to be too invested in Ro-um’s case and keeping track of her.
