Glamorous Review: Kim Cattrall and Miss Benny Starrer is Representative But Boring

Glamorous Review

Glamorous Review: Created and executive produced by Jordon Nardino, along with Damon Wayans Jr. and Kameron Tarlow, it is a comedy workplace TV series released on Netflix. There are ten episodes with a runtime of about 30-45 minutes and they follow Marco, an aspiring beauty influencer who gets a chance to work at a luxury beauty company, but it isn’t all glitter and glam as expected.

The cast of the series includes Kim Cattrall as Madolyn Addison, Miss Benny as Marco Meija, Jade Payton as Venetia, Zane Phillips as Chad, Michael Hsu Rosen as Ben, Ayesha Harris as Britt, Graham Parkhurst as Parker, Aldrin Bundoc, Brock Ciarlelli, Charlene Incarnate, Chiquitita, Diana Maria Riva, Joel Kim Booster, Lisa Gilroy, Mark Deklin, Matt Rogers, Monét X Change, Nicole Power, Priyanka, Ricardo Chavira and Serena Tea.

Glamorous Review 7

Marco is an aspiring beauty influencer with around 1000 followers and has a part-time job at the mall selling make-up. But their mother wants them to take some more serious job like a paralegal trainee until they get scouted by Madolyn Addison, as her second assistant. It’s a dream job for Marco but he didn’t realise that it will take more than slaying his daily work outfit, to climb the corporate ladder. Amidst a financially sinking company, obnoxious colleagues and complicated love situationships, Marco has to make all the right choices or it will all crumble down.

It’s a typical story of a CEO getting inspired by some random person they meet for a minute and decide to just change everything. In a real setting, if a new person just came in thinking they can make a company better just because the boss liked their one idea, it will be a nightmare for all the other employees working their asses off to get the higher authorities what they want. This is understandable why Marco gets hated by Chad, the director of Sales & Madolyn’s son. However, the problem is that Marco does nothing throughout the show than say some catchphrases and give very basic ideas that others have to make it better.

Despite being the main character, he doesn’t really play a role in the turning points of the show. His character doesn’t have any growth or development apart from realising that he shouldn’t be two-timing & then bitch about the respective other. Having Kim Cattrall as one of the leading cast, one would expect some scene-stealing, charismatic moments considering she is in a powerful position as well. But it never happens. Instead, she is an indecisive, finicky character that looks like she doesn’t even wanna be there. It’s like someone saying some impressive words with an absolutely dull face that anyone won’t even bother listening to.

The biggest lacking factor in the show is comedy. The characters come to work, get reminded of the impending unemployment doom, bicker with each other and then go to the gay bar to make some bad decisions in life. Especially, how they show the work culture of trying to make things happen in a week, is like watching a horror show. Creators might have thought that looks funny – a guy wiping his armpits in the washroom because he hasn’t gone home in 3 days. There are no chuckles in the audience, only a gasp of horror & a reminder of toxic workplaces.

Amidst everything, the character of Ben who is played by Michael Hsu Rosen, is like fresh air. He is shown as the ‘nice guy’ but he is far from the self-loathing and annoying ones. He is someone that everyone would want to be friends with and if any creators are looking to add a nice guy archetype, then Ben should be the base example.

Glamorous Review

The series is Netflix’s contribution to Pride Month and in terms of representation, they have done a fairly good job. In terms of storytelling, it’s just a mindless watch that you can tune into while having dinner, after a long day. If you are looking for some iconic scenes or dialogues to come out of it, then just lower your expectations. Also, quite a number of internet slang are used in dialogues, which might be confusing for people who aren’t aware of it all.

Overall Rating: 2.5/5
