When Mike visits the Benedictis Homeless Society, looking for Aldi, he remembers a crucial part of what happened on the night of the Christmas market attack. Mike, Luka Zaric and Roland Sokowski were casually hanging out at the shooting range, having drinks & drugs when they were called on duty because of the attack. Since Mike wasn’t drunk, he was asked to drive the car but he was high on drugs and ended up hitting a homeless man named Polyphemus. He wanted to report the accident but Zaric stopped him & shoved the body into the car.

They came to the conclusion that they would place his body at the market attack site and nobody would know. But they didn’t clear out the homeless man’s cart and belongings off the road, which created suspicion on why was his body found so far away if he was supposedly hit by a car. On the other hand, Jule and Tom were making progress in Judge Herres and the related cases.

They were quite close to investigating the trio when someone shot Tom while he was waiting for her by the river. They were on call as well and he mentioned seeing Mike coming his way. Thus, Jule calls up Tinka to know about his whereabouts but he is with his daughter & wife, explaining what happened eight months ago and why he was running away. She then suspected Zaric to be the anonymous killer, since Tom was investigating him that day.

After the call, Lenni drops Mike near the pier as Zaric had told her. But it turns out, he was planning on taking his life by eating all the poppy pills & shooting himself. He even recorded a voice note apologising to Mike & confessing the crime they did. However, Mike saves him by making him puke up all the pills and taking him to the hospital. Despite Steck’s insistence on getting Abou Basher to confess to killing Idris and getting him a 5-year sentence, Jule makes a deal with Basher to hold out and walk out of the prison freely. Since she knows that he is not the killer and will catch the real culprit soon.

While Mike gets the hair sample that he found at Idris’s crime scene tested at the lab, it is revealed to be groundhog hair. Suddenly something stuck in his mind, the only person who could have a groundhog was Roland. At the same time, Jule reaches the KDD unit’s office, looking for Zaric but only finds Roland who seems quite hostile towards her. As soon as she leaves, he rushes to his locker & pulls out a blood-stained card of Jule Andergast, which was taken from the hand of Joachim Jurgens by his killer. He then loads his gun and heads out, tracking her cellphone location. On her way home, she makes a plan to meet Mike in an hour but the recent development makes him anxious.

He bikes to Jule’s house in a hurry and Zaric is also sent out to look for Roland. Both of them reach the house, where Sokowski is about to shoot an unconscious Jule. Mike reaches out to him and he is instantly happy to see him, sharing how he killed everyone that tried to investigate the Herres case. Zaric also catches up to them and they try to calm him down. While trying to distract him, Jule wakes up & reaches for a wine bottle near her bed. She sneakingly stands up & hits Sokowski’s head when he was distracted by his two friends.

In the end, it’s shown that Basher walks out free from prison and Sokowski is convicted of human slaughter. Meanwhile, Mike and Zaric are on probation, yet Corinna badges Jule about her innocence but she doesn’t believe a word and shows how she was racially biased to frame Bashers for the crimes they didn’t commit. At last, she quits her job. Mike is shown doing community service and organising a funeral for Polyphemus. He also takes his whole family on a trip, while Zaric finally takes his boat for a sail with Corinna on board.
