See You in My 19th Life Episode 4 Recap/Review: Haunting Memories

See You in My 19th Life Episode 4

See You in My 19th Life Episode 4 is titled ‘The Inability to Forget about the one you long for’ and starts with Ban Ji-eum’s (Shin Hye-sun) third life, where she is reborn in the same timeline as her last death & meets her mother. But the mother from the past life doesn’t accept a wood-picking boy claiming to be her late daughter. This leaves a deep impression on her and she hesitates from telling anyone about her unique power. Especially when she is reborn as Yoon Ju-won and finds the motherly love that she always craved.

Coming to the present day, Mun Seo-ha (Ahn Bo-hyun) finds her imagining reuniting with her mother and even accidentally calls him like Ju-won used to. But she comes back to her senses quickly and when her mother seems to come out again, Seo-ha runs away again, holding Ji-eum’s hand. They have ramen together in the convenience store and later he goes back to Ha Do-yoon’s (Ahn Dong-goo) house. There we get an interaction between Seo-ha and Do-yoon’s younger brother who treats him like his role model. He briefly mentions how Seo-ha once saved him from some bad people & since then he has been a fan.

Meanwhile, Ji-eum encounters a man in a black suit passing by her. Strangely, he assesses her as if he knows who she is and a weird connection is sensed between them. Later we see him taking out a rattling tool that is usually used by shamans while calling upon the spirits. Although a lot is on Ji-eum’s mind and she thinks that the best way to help Seo-ha is by making him forget about Ju-won. Also because she is afraid he might not be accepting of her if he knew her real identity. The next day, they visit Cho-won (Ha Yoon-kyung) to appoint her in charge of landscaping at the hotel.

There, she ends up asking Ji-eum if they have met before because she feels quite familiar with her. Startled by it, she accidentally drops the tea set but gets happy to see Seo-ha concerned about her. She then asks him to give her three chances to confess, if he declines all, then she will stop bothering him. At the same time, Cho-won also asks Do-yoon out but he declines her on the spot, saying she is not the one he is looking for. Coming back to the hotel, some new flowers recognised by Seo-ha are in the lobby vase, which makes him wonder about the person who put them there. But Ms Jang’s son breaks the moment and gets kicked out by security in return.

When Seo-ha goes to Ms Jang to report about it, she offends him further leading him to investigate her work in the last few years. He is trying to find out discrepancies in the budget allocation and other things so that he can confront her. However, it seems like she had already complained about it to the Chairman, who enquires about it with Do-yoon. When he tries to ask further about the reason to call them back to Korea, the Chairman humiliates him to do only the things he has been asked. He also gives him money for his father’s memorial as he used to work with them as well. Considering he died on the same day, he must be the driver who was taking Seo-ha and Ju-won in the car.

Seo-ha had to go out to eat alone as Do-yoon had to meet the Chairman but he encounters Ji-eum running away from a man. They are seen hitting each other and when he tries to interfere, he gets hit in the face. This enrages Ji-eum and she scares her brother Dong-u away. On asking who he was, Ji-eum is embarrassed to be even related to a person who only wants her to give them money. To make her feel better, Seo-ha takes her to the restaurant nearby and has a drink or two. While drinking, he wonders why does Ji-eum reminds her so much of Ju-won. They don’t even look alike.

Another special power of Ji-eum is that she never gets drunk no matter how many drinks she gulps down. Thus, she ends up taking drunk Seo-ha home. But she isn’t able to handle him alone and isn’t even able to hail a taxi. She tries to take him in a cart used by recycle box picker, as she used to be a rickshaw puller in her 16th life but he falls down from it as well. With Do-yoon also not picking up the call, Cho-won is her last resort for help. They somehow bring him home and ask Do-yoon for the passcode, which turns out to be related to Ju-won. While putting him in bed, Seo-ha starts calling for Ju-won and begging Ji-eum not to leave, as Cho-won realises how much pain he still carries in his heart.

See You in My 19th Life Episode 4 Review

One of the biggest differences between the webtoon and the drama is Cho-won’s profession. She is shown as an Entertainment company CEO but now she is a landscaper in the drama. It could be done to bring all the characters into one place, so the story could develop fast. Also, the introduction of Lee Chae-min as Kang Min-ki is quite dark and it makes one wonder if he will be transformed into the antagonist or ill-fated connection in Ji-eum’s life.

Also, a new character named Han-na is introduced who wants to protect someone and has been the one changing the flowers. It’s a high possibility that she is Seo-ha’s mother who was reborn, just like Ju-won told him about his mother’s death.

See You in My 19th Life (번 생도 잘 부탁해) is available for streaming on Netflix in selective regions and is broadcasted on tvN at 09:20 PM KST, every Saturday & Sunday.
