Deadloch Episode 5 Review/Recap: Going Round and Round

Deadloch Episode 5

Deadloch Episode 5 has a runtime of about 56 minutes and shocks the residents with another murder, with no suspect in sight. No development in the cases is also hampering the detective’s careers, whose job is now on the line.

The show stars Kate Box as Dulcie Collins, Madeleine Sami as Eddie Redcliffe, Nina Oyama as Abby, Alicia Gardiner as Cath, Tom Ballard as Sven, Susie Youssef as Aleyna, Hollie Austin as Skye and Stephanie Jack as Megan.

Deadloch Episode 5 Recap

Due to the previous hiccups and the suspicion of a serial killer, the media is heckling the officers to give them some scoop about the case. But being unsure, they have nothing to share and have to hide in Cath’s truck to reach the Police station. And another murder news awaits them again. This time Jimmy Cook has been murdered & his body was found on the beach again by the locals.

However, his case was a bit different because his body was attached to a wooden cross & chained up to it, just like Jesus Christ was crucified. Other than that, his body had the same signs & a missing tongue as the other victims. Forensic officer James is also back in town but he is completely unwilling to go beyond and test everything related to the murder. He even complains to the higher official, which reprimands the two detectives to get him a suspect soon or they can say bye to the case & even their jobs.

Due to the religious resemblance, detectives enquire about it from the town’s priest & ask for a list of regular parishioners. Names like Vanessa and the O’Dwyers come up, Dulcie even witnesses Victoria O’Dwyer near the church but they decide to question Vanessa, as loads of her pictures were found in Jimmy’s room. From their investigation, all they get to know is that Jimmy was a pervert, who jerked off in front of many women of the town. And one such victim of his indecent act was Nola, Mike Nugent’s mother, who used to be a cop as well.

While Eddie is fixated on finding clues about Mike, as she thinks that he is the culprit; Dulcie has a hunch about O’Dwyer’s and tries to question Skye. However, she doesn’t find anything unusual and her familiarity bias towards them clouds her judgement. At Mike’s house, they find a kit with the Pentobarbital but it turns out to be an expired one, bought due to her mother’s disease & a last resort to be freed from all the pain. But it was never used.

They were to square one with no suspects on their list & Dulcie had to go pick up Cath from Skye O’Dwyer’s home. Since the Feastival was cancelled all the food she had bought to cook is going to be wasted, so she is feeding other people in the town. A drunk Cath reveals to her that Skye bought something for almost $12,000 and wouldn’t even reveal what. This information clicks something with her, along with the chains and other stuff left on her desk. Simultaenously, Eddie takes a look at the list of people Mike gave a ticket to on the day of Sam’s murder.

They see a familiar name – Skye O’Dwyer, whereas she had said that she wasn’t in Deadloch when her father died. Also, the tools that she uses to cook her meat are the same as the ones found with Jimmy’s corpse. This could only mean that Skye could have bought a boat, which she uses to place the bodies on the beach, leaving no trace as the waves wash them up quickly.

All this while, Abby was also determined to test the evidence found at the scene & her hunch about the wooden cross having arsine or some chemical turns out right. Another piece of evidence supporting Skye being the killer was the Priest’s screenplay where he wrote about the townspeople with a changed name. Even Vanessa reveals to Journalist Megan that Skye hated all the men in town & is the one who killed them.

Deadloch Episode 5 Review

With all the evidence indicating Skye, one would think that they have caught the killer. But given the show’s record, she might not be the real culprit. There are three more episodes still left & it’s obvious that the killer will not be caught so early on. The whole episode was just a filler with the characters running around chasing the ghost of an unknown killer.

At this point, they are just stretching the plot with the same humour & innuendos without any progress or hooking aspect. It could have been wrapped up in 4-5 episodes max, as there’s certainly no charm left to keep on watching for another three weeks when they will be doing the same thing over & over.
