Doctor Slump Episode 3 Recap
Doctor Slump Episode 3 starts with a flashback of their high school days, showing how Jeong-woo (Park Hyung-sik) became competitive towards Ha-neul (Park Shin-hye). Before her transfer to the school, he used to be the popular kid who used to be placed first all the time. Jeong-woo is the type to excel in things without putting in a lot of effort, even if he does he doesn’t show. On the contrary, Ha-neul puts all her strength into achieving what she wants and that amazes Jeong-woo, motivating him to do better. But things take a turn when both of them blackout in the classroom because of pushing themselves too hard.
In the present time, both of them wake up embarrassed about crying in each other’s embrace last night. They blame the alcohol and decide to maintain their distance. On the bright side, the situation at Ha-neul’s home takes a 180-degree turn. After the family finds her anxiety pills, her mother apologises for her behaviour and tries to help Ha-neul to feel better. They go overboard in trying to cheer her up by feeding her various natural supplements and even throwing a depression party. Instead of making Ha-neul happy, it makes her feel that they want her to recover from her slump and go back to her earlier ways quickly.
Things take a dark turn for Jeong-woo as well when his rooftop room is broken into by the mysterious masked man. Although nothing had been stolen, it became unsafe for him to stay, in case the person came back to harm him instead. Thus, Ha-neul invites him to sleep at her home and her family is also delighted to know that they were classmates. While trying to learn about her high school days, they get to know how Ha-neul stopped herself from enjoying regular things like hanging out with friends, to immerse herself in just studying.

While the sad revelation made her mother teary-eyed, it gave Jeong-woo an idea to cheer Ha-neul up. Together they go out to do the things she missed out on, like eating teok-bokki (spicy rice cake), playing games at the arcade and singing at the karaoke. Although she pretended that it wasn’t a big deal to pass on these things, she truly enjoyed the experience. And Jeong-woo’s words of advice for her ‘to just rest at her rock bottom’, gave her much comfort than she expected.
But life doesn’t really go the way one wants and Ha-neul is hit with another anguishing news. She got to know that the Professor never made her a permanent employee as she had believed, instead he extended her contract each year. That means she would get much less amount in severance pay than a permanent employee would. As she was storming off to confront the Professor again, Jeong-woo stopped her since it would only malign her image and it would become hard for her to find employment.
To thank her family for giving him a place to sleep and fixing the broken window, Jeong-woo brings a box of tangerine to give them as a gift. However, he overhears Ba-da telling her mother about his case and how it could badly affect Ha-neul. Hearing them thinking badly of him, he walks back to the rooftop with a heavy heart and is overwhelmed with the emotions that have temporarily disappeared. Even when Ha-neul tries to converse with him, he doesn’t respond and that makes her curious about him.
She soon realises that he must have heard her family discussing him and begins researching about his case. The details don’t seem to make sense since the presence of anticoagulants wouldn’t necessarily lead to excessive bleeding, as it happened during surgery. Thus, she researched more about such cases and found similar incidents where such surgical accidents occurred.
Meanwhile, Jeong-woo is shown to be getting ready for his trial and looks quite glum since the mysterious anesthesiologist refused to appear in court once again. With his refusal, it starts to look suspicious for Jeong-woo and people suspect that the doctor refused due to guilt or not wanting to expose Jeong-woo. Once Ha-neul finds all the evidence she can, she rushes to the courtroom to submit it. But the judge refuses to accept the evidence at the last minute and tells them to go through all the procedures so they can discuss it in the next hearing.
Outside the court, journalists crowd up Jeong-woo asking him to comment something. Just then, someone pushes Ha-neul and she almost falls on her knees. Jeong-woo quickly rushes to her and both of them run away from the media personnel. He then takes her to his hospital which now stands closed and tends to her wound from falling down. Instead of worrying about his trial, he asks Ha-neul about her severance pay situation but she assures him that she doesn’t care about it now.
Instead, she wants to help him, for consoling her that night and asks what he wants to do to cheer up. He suggests that they should watch the sunrise in Sokcho. Unfortunately, they didn’t check the weather forecast and due to cloudiness, even the sun can’t be seen. But that doesn’t dampen their spirits and rather laugh at their grim situation. At this moment, Jeong-woo suggests that they should become friends instead of referring to each other as just classmates. And exchange phone numbers to hang out sometimes.
Towards the end of Doctor Slump Episode 3, it is revealed that Jeong-woo’s office and the rooftop room are bugged with hidden cameras. The purpose of the break-in was to place the hidden camera, but it’s not certain who it could be. Also, an extended version of the first scene is shown, where both of them are rushed to the nurse’s office. Jeong-woo thought that Ha-neul was quite rude to not even ask him about his condition. In reality, she wrote him an encouragement note to not push himself too hard but drops it when she sees his mother not caring for Jeong-woo’s health and is only interested in his grades.
Doctor Slump Episode 3 Review
Through Doctor Slump Episode 3, we are starting to see Ha-neul’s perspective. So far, we have only seen her as an indifferent teen, only caring about studying. Going forward we might realise that there’s a perfect reason for everything that Ha-neul did. For some reason, Ha-neul getting 4-5 incorrect answers in her final SATs could be a deliberate act to help Jeong-woo. In the preview, Hong-ran refers to him as Ha-neul’s first love and it could mean that she could be helping him without anyone noticing and even in the present time, she will be the one to help get him on his feet.
As for Jeong-woo, the mishappening around him seems like something that isn’t associated with his actions. It could be because of his parents and maybe a way to bring them down. One thing is for sure, Doctor Slump is keeping up the momentum with an interesting storyline every episode without a lacking moment.
Doctor Slump is available for streaming on Netflix. The new episode will be released on February 4, 2024, at 10:30 PM KST on JTBC or 8:30 PM IST/10:30 AM EST.
