Enhypen’s Dark Blood Album Review: Alluring, Addictive and Mature

Enhypen's Dark Blood Album Review

Enhypen’s Dark Blood Album marks the K-pop group’s comeback with their 4th mini album. Consisting of members including Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon, and Ni-ki, the group is making their comeback after almost a year since their third EP, Manifesto: Day 1.

Formed through the survival program I-Land, the concept for the group’s album showcased a story of fear, love, desire and darkness that looms around it all. It centres around the theme that has been teased since their debut, revolving around vampires. A similar storyline was seen in the concept film & the album delves further into it.

Enhypen Dark Blood Album Tracklist

Fate

This intro track starts with the members talking about their connection with the one that changed them/ the one they love. They say how everything was meant to be & they are fated to be together. It’s a 2-minute and 32 seconds track & in the middle of it, the song starts playing, which sounds like something that they will be using in their first music show performances or much suited for a concert.

Bite Me

It is the title track of the album, which starts off with an addictive verse that will be playing in your head, even when the song stops playing. The music video expresses the wait for a lover that has left them. In the concept trailer, we saw how Sunghoon tries to protect the girl from being harmed by the other members, only for everywhen to be bitten by her in the end.

However, the concept films after the trailer showed how they all woke up from the dead & became the same as the girl who turned them. In the music video, Enhypen members are hoping for her to return to them and Bite as they are the same now. In a way, she is the one to show them a light in this dark world which they have become a part of. As compared to songs in general the bridge grabs your attention as the beat drops into a singing rap verse before the melodious hook of the song makes you groove.

Sacrifice (Eat Me Up)

This synth-based track is a bit laid back but an alluring song which makes you imagine a sensual performance, where the group would be singing effortlessly and showcasing beautiful contemporary dance moves. The lyrics express their struggle with the darkness that has taken over them. If needed they will sacrifice their whole life for their lover and seek their help to deal with it all.

Chaconne

The word Chaconne basically refers to the dance form from ancient times and also to the musical composition based on the continuous variation of harmonic progression. The track follows the progression, whereas the lyrics tell about the desire to dance on and on. It can be speculated that the track can get a music video later on, considering it talks about dancing and could also show a memory in the character’s life when they were happily dancing with their loved one.

Bills

The fifth track falls more on the modern pop side, as compared to others. As we are reaching the end of the album, it looks like the group is trying a different musical side with somewhat relaxed but emotion-heavy songs. The song changes the mood of the album from asking the lover to come back to pay the price for all their tears & pain. The lyrics express a desire to let go of chasing them and seem to be giving up.

Karma

This guitar-heavy song brings a contrast to the album. The rebellious track is definitely more in line with Enhypen’s previous discography and expresses how they will find the one they love, no matter what. This is their Karma that binds them forever.

Final Thoughts

Through this mini-album, Enhypen is gearing towards a mature side and experimenting with different sounds. Among the 6 tracks, the title track and Sacrifice are definitely my favourites, as I personally like the type of music.
