How to Deal With a Heartbreak Review

While Maria Fe articulated her dating experience in her debut novel, which got her quite famous. After surviving a pandemic, economic crisis and other things in the last three years, she is back in her parent’s home – broke and uninspired. Having her writing career cut short and with a gap of three years, she doesn’t have a clue what to write about. Social media influencing on the other hand has been going quite well for her.

Her friends Natalia and Carolina seem to be doing pretty well as compared to Maria. Natalia is getting married to her boyfriend and Carolina is successfully running a bakery business. Watching them move on in their lives, Maria pushes herself to complete her second book and even promises her publisher that it can be displayed at the National Book Fair, in three months. The only issue is – she hasn’t even started.

Just when she thinks that everything is aligning in place, her father passes away due to a heart attack. Already dealing with a writing block, the loss of a loved one creates a complete mental block and fear towards her own skills. Like the last time, she believes that dating the wrong person could bring her back on track and she can put down her feelings into a hit novel. And what could be better than dating her teenage crush, whom she bumps into accidentally?

What Maria doesn’t realise is that an awful dating experience might not be the best solution and what she is going through might be much deeper than a surface-level sadness. The shadow of her father haunts her everywhere, whatever she does and doesn’t, often stopping her from living her life as usual. The breakthrough comes from a writing workshop that her mother signs her up for, without asking.

Through this, she is able to ignite her passion for writing and maybe even understand her relationships better, be it with her friends, family or partner. The film talks about the perpetual fear of all writers, which to other people may seem like – ‘just write whatever you think or are feeling’. But when the fear and anxiety of every word not being good enough and failing sets in, ‘writing anything’ is not something that would help or even happen.

The first film was mostly based on her blog and her dating experiences and the sequel explores Maria Fe as a person. What does she really value in life or fear. Also through her friends, we get to see how people often feel that they have to follow the same old customs set by society and often get burdened by it. Whereas, everyone’s life is different one should do what they think is right and love, instead of going by ‘what others will say’.

It’s a quick, heartwarming movie that many would find relatable. Especially people in their late 20s and 30s who feel like the time is running away and they haven’t accomplished anything or haven’t found the one and settling down is just a distant mirage.

Rating: 3.5/5
