King the Land Episode 3 Recap/Review: Gu-won’s Unrequited Feelings

King the Land Episode 3

King the Land Episode 3 brings Gu-won (Lee Jun-ho) and Sa-rang (Im Yoon-a) together to spend time together, against their will. When Gu-won sits down for the live interview, Sa-rang’s first question catches him off-guard. She asks about his thoughts on his mother being one of the founding members of the hotel and how she has heard that he resembles her a lot.

Such personal questions were filtered out by him earlier but his sister sent new interview questions that would remind him of the traumatic past. He walks out of the live stream but Sa-rang’s quick thinking keeps the show going until he comes back. He then throws away the question cards and instead tells her to ask real questions.

She instead compliments the beautiful sunset and they stand up to see the view. After the broadcast, she gives him an earful about making her job difficult but his intense and hurt gaze, makes her wonder what could have gone wrong.

The next day, Gu-won barely coordinates in the photoshoots and the biggest hurdle is his serious face. Even when he tries to smile, it comes out as a sarcastic smirk. They are then asked to ride a boat to show the fresh ingredients that are used by the hotel. Somehow the boat encounters a malfunction in the middle. Not having enough power to go back, the boat captain takes them to the nearest island, Gapa-do.

He makes arrangements at a local inn run by an elderly couple for them to stay. On the way, Gu-won passes out on seeing an old woman and mistaking her for a ghost. When he wakes up, he finds himself lying in a traditional house. At dinner, the inn owners bring traditional wine for their welcome and the duo ends up drinking it all while trying to show off their drinking limits. They again get into an argument about smiling and even Sa-rang confesses that it’s hard to keep on smiling when she is sad inside.

After their conversation/argument, they go back to their separate rooms, which turn out to be a single room with a curtain in the middle. Making an awkward morning the next day. While they are waiting for the boat captain to take them back, the inn owner gives them a bicycle to roam around and check out the beautiful landscapes. Gu-won doesn’t want to go at first but eventually finds himself smiling while looking at the scenery.

When they come back, the inn lady tells them their checkout amount is 675,000 won, which sounds like an exaggerated amount. On seeing how the captain is calling the lady his mother, Sa-rang suspects that the captain tried to scam them by making excuses for the boat malfunction & now charging excessively. She applies the same price as the hotel & comes up with a reasonable amount of 350,000 won. They try to protest but Sa-rang stands her ground. On the ride back, she even apologises to Gu-won if her words hurt him during the interview.

On returning to Seoul, he visits his father, asking for the truth about his mother. But receives no response back and only threats to obey his duty to the family. Yet, he is determined to unveil the truth that haunts him. Sa-rang on the other hand, receives many praises for her work and even gets promoted to work at King the Land, which specifically serves the VIPs. While seeing the pictures from the shoot, Gu-won has certainly grown feelings for Sa-rang and even takes a test to figure out his feelings. The result reveals that he has an unrequited crush on the person, who is on his mind and it’s better to confess soon.

When he sees Sa-rang walking out after her shift, he buys macarons for her, as he saw her eating them at the shoot and follows outside. However, before he could approach her, her boyfriend comes out of nowhere and hugs her. Seeing them like that, Gu-won turns back.

King the Land Episode 3 Review

Many viewers pointed out that the story feels like something that was written in the 2010s and this episode somewhat proves this opinion. The scene of the air hostess being weighed and criticised for being beyond 50 kg was really outdated. There is no specific weight limit for the crew and then body shaming them was just tasteless and not comedic.

So many things don’t make sense like there were two boats & if one was not working then they could have moved to the second boat. Being the director of the hotel, nobody seemed to check if he came back or not, not even his assistant. Also, their argument about not smiling is being stretched so much without giving any reasoning for it. Trying to make it a lighthearted watch, the creators seem to have ignored logic and reasoning. But even the comedy is not able to salvage from the lacking points.

King the Land is currently available on Netflix in selective regions. It is broadcasted on JTBC at 10:30 PM KST on Saturday and Sunday.
