Million Follower Detective Review

Episode 1 of Million Follower Detective opens with an eerie video of an internet personality named Witch Baba. It seems like a girl with a bob, wearing a white mask. She predicts that on September 30, someone will be shot dead. Soon after, we see a man carrying a gun and walking towards the police station. He points his gun openly at the entrance and is quickly surrounded by armed police men.

On the other hand, our main lead is police officer Chen Chia-jen, who seems to have a strained relationship with his daughter. He soon pulls up to the police station and quickly moves into action, seeing a man pointing a gun. While trying to get a hold of the man, Chia-jen ends up shooting him. Everything is recorded and uploaded to the internet, branding him as the killer cop.

As the incident becomes viral, the identity of the man is revealed to be a popular influencer, Wei Yen. However, it turns out he was carrying a pellet gun and not a real one. Even Witch Baba talks about the incident, relating it to her prediction, and makes another sensational prediction after pulling out three tarot cards – someone will die by drowning. As Chia-jen gains notoriety on the internet and mysterious deaths boggle the authorities, he pursues a conflicting chase to figure out who is committing these murders and the identity of Witch Baba, who could be behind all this.

Million Follower Detective: What’s Good?

Needless to say, whenever there’s a shadowy, masked figure present in the story, which moves the plot forward, an interest instantly grows to find out who is behind the veil. Witch Baba’s ominous predictions while giggling, and the unfolding of those horrifying incidents, instantly grab your attention for the first three episodes at least.

The pacing, slowly revealing the past of all the characters involved, and hints of suspense and suspicion around most of the characters makes it an intriguing watch. Especially, Ekin Cheng’s character as Chia-jen makes you question several times if he is the one playing us and everyone around him. Many times, he comes across as the bad guy, probably the serial killer on a murderous spree, because things went wrong in his personal life, with his wife and his daughter.

Other times, you suspect perhaps his daughter is the one behind it, due to traumatic events in her family life. This suspense is what binds it together, as you are always suspecting whodunnit. But one can never be sure until the end. It explores some tidbits of the influencer world and the craze towards going viral on the internet. However, the examples of antics that influencers use are a bit grim or on the extreme side, owing to the nature of the crime thriller.

By the end of episode 6, it may seem that the mystery is mostly solved and even looks predictable. Then, what more could happen in the last two episodes? If you find yourself questioning this, then believe me that the answer won’t disappoint you. It’s like another climax after climax, which finally leads to a resolution. Making it worth sitting through the eight episodes.

Million Follower Detective: What Questionable?

While Million Follower Detective is a binge-worthy thriller, some things are left unquestioned and make you go eh? For example, most of the murders are committed by another person and are portrayed as self-inflicted by the killer. However, the first kill by Chia-jen doesn’t make much sense. Why was Wei-yen pointing his pellet gun in public? Was he threatened? If yes, then by whom? How did they convince him to walk into his own death, and why in this setting? It’s possible that Wei-yen could have been body tackled by the officers instead of getting shot.

If the killer was on a revenge spree, they could have just shot, stabbed, drowned, etc and then dispose the body publicly. Understandably, each murder is committed in a different way for the theatrics of making the predictions dramatic and impactful. But why is Witch Baba portrayed as a giggling sadistic maniac, while announcing potential deaths? Even if they speak in a serious tone, the message is already grim to hear. Or it reflects the internet scape, where deaths are just a matter of joke and increasing reach.

The biggest loophole is Chia-jen’s family life. It’s shown that his family life fell apart because his wife died mysteriously. But how did his life reach that point? What’s the reason behind his wife’s death? These subplots seem incomplete and surface-level, just to give a reason for why Chia-jen is aggressive or unpredictable.

Another thing that makes it over the top is Chia-jen’s case-solving instinct. He already knows what happened without any evidence and just suspects people left and right without giving any reason, although his guess is right. Also, not entirely familiar with how Taiwanese crime investigation units work, but everyone seems to be on their own tangent, and solving crimes solely and secretly.

Especially, the character of Li Hsin-ping is always going off on her own with no regard to the case she is working on, and not even protecting the prime victims who urgently need protection. Making one question the afterthought behind the character and whether the character is there to add tears and incompetence.

Million Follower Detective: Final Thoughts

Overall, it’s a good thriller series that keeps building the suspense until the final resolution. While there are a few questionable and surface-level subplots, the mystery keeps you hooked, and you even ignore minor loopholes. The performance by all the actors holds the story together and presents an entertaining series that one could binge in a day.
