My Perfect Stranger Episode 16 Recap

In the last episode, Hae-jun and Yoon-young brace themselves to back to 2021 but even after passing the tunnel, they find themselves in 1987 only. Disappointed by it, they wonder what could have gone wrong & if they will be able to even go back at all. Yoon-young finally asks him if he is the one who invented it. He says that he found it under the same tunnel, one rainy night. It was as if someone wanted the car to be found as the manual & how to time travel was clearly instructed.

While drinking, Hae-jun also remembers the day he time travelled together with Yoon-young. While going through the tunnel, he actually got a call from someone who told him that he is the only one who can resolve everything. It sounded like someone who already knew him. But now they have to figure out how to fix the car and hopefully be able to go back. Meanwhile, Chairman Yoon visits Soon-ae’s family and apologises for everything that Yeon-woo did.

Soon-ae also recovers well & sees how her novel is being received so well, even her classmates are happy to see her. She even gives the first copy to Yoon-young, while Hae-jun visits Chairman Yoon at Dong-sik’s suggestion. His house was vandalised from the outside with angry posters from furious residents. Chairman Yoon also apologises to Hae-jun and says that he is grateful to Hae-jun, as he did the right thing. With no other thing left to do, Yoon-young & Hae-jun decide to spend quality time with their families until the car is fixed. She goes for a cycling picnic & he takes his grandfather fishing.

At night, a man in a black leather jacket was continuously strolling around the house. Just when Hae-jun returns after dropping his grandfather, the man enters his house & greets him. He asks the man, who he is & how he knows him. Then he promptly replies that doesn’t his voice sound familiar and repeats the words from the phone call. He further says that he missed him a lot because he is actually his father. While the man keeps on hugging Hae-jun, he is confused since he would have died in 2022 then how does he have a son? Apparently, Hae-jun didn’t die in 2022, his body was never found which means he was able to save himself.

His son then reveals that he is the one who created the time machine & left it for him to find. He wanted to give him one chance to change the past. And now with his help, he was able to fix the car again. When Yoon-young comes back, he tells her that they can finally go back & asks if she needs more time to say goodbyes. She refuses and says that they can meet their loved ones again in their present, so let’s go back. But before that, Hae-jun gives Chung-ah a visit & tells her to live a good life without any regrets. He assures her son will grow well without hating her so, she should also forget everything.

With anxious minds, they sit back in the car to time-travel to 2021 and fortunately, they make it there. It turns out that they were gone for almost a month & Yoon-young’s house has completely changed. Her mother was alive & together with her father. They were glad to see her and so was Hae-jun’s grandfather, who even marked his return on the calendar. But the past was changed & he seem to have spent a lovely childhood with Chairman Yoon. Yoon-young also bumps into Mi-suk at the bookstore and was curious about what she could be doing in her life.

Yoon-young also grew up to be an editor only, but works for her mother instead who has become an established writer. She seems to be writing a novel of her own, based on the time travel experience she just had & titled the same as the show. Her parents often talk about teacher Yoon when they see Hae-jun on the news but don’t find anything suspicious.

In the flashback, it was shown that Hae-jun stops his son from meeting his mother, Yoon-young, since that would take away all the surprise of their relationship & future. Meanwhile, one day while taking a stroll, they discuss how it’s going to be May 16 again & the same thought goes through their mind – what if they go back again & try to save everyone now that they know the culprit?

With only one round trip left, they travel back in time again with the hope that if anything goes wrong, their future with come to save them. Before leaving, Hae-jun says the line that they didn’t run into each other coincidentally but they were meant to run into one another. As long as they are together, he believes everything will be fine.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 16 Review

It was one happy ending for the show but also leaves the space for interpretation, as to what could have happened when they went back the second time. Will they be able to save everyone who died or change the timeline once again? While the ending is satisfactory, it leaves some questions unanswered. Mainly about Yeon-woo and the crimes he committed.

As detailed as the suspense was till the culprit was revealed, it feels like the ending was rushed and could have provided a better explanation. They created such buildup but then served everything on a single platter with not much justification. Also, Mi-suk’s story seems incomplete since she was again left at the mercy of her abusive brother. There should have been some development in her situation as well, apart from her personality. Keeping that aside, it was definitely one of the best crime thriller series of the year & should certainly win some awards for the writing & acting.

Overall Rating: 4/5
