Pensati Sexy Review
Maddalena, a 30-year-old single woman, currently struggles with self-confidence. Within her deeply religious Catholic family, she feels like an outsider, and her romantic encounters consistently fall short of her desires. Moreover, Maddalena finds herself in an uncertain professional situation as a ghostwriter, adding to the instability in her life. After an unfavourable makeout session with her office crush, Maddalena becomes convinced that enhancing her attractiveness or becoming sexy is necessary and resolves to undertake all possible measures to achieve this outcome.
While having the marijuana-laced cake made by her flatmate, she seeks the answers on the internet and it takes her to the world of pornography. Trying to learn a trick or two from the porn videos, Maddalena is surprised by the lead actress Valentina Nappi, as she knocks on her screen. Although she closes it in fear of losing her mind but Valentina or Vale starts following her around everywhere, like a guardian angel sent from above to sort her life.
She does her best to make Maddalena realise how much she diminishes herself, in fact, her self-esteem is like an empty room. Signifying that there’s absolutely nothing in her life that she is proud of. Her looks, weight, body shape, singlehood and uncertain career are like the bars of a prison, keeping her from breaking out of her self-made mould and realising that the reality might not be as doomed as she believes it. As Vale and Maddalena argue over different opinions to helping and supporting each other at every step, the situation changes for the better.

Diana Del Bufalo as Maddalena is like any other woman. Insecure about a hundred trivial things, losing their own individuality in trying to become like others, who seem cool & confident. Unfortunately, in reality, even the cool and confident ones are no different from Maddalena. Having been brought up by a strict mother, nagging her to lose weight or get together with that one ex from high school, because she has been single too long – has left a deep impact on her. Making her believe that she is never perfect enough.
On the other hand, despite all the insecurities, Maddalena has become a wonderful, smart and attractive woman who could easily date anyone she fancies. But she is so blinded by her insignificant flaws that she refuses to see how people want to get to know her, yet she is always chasing after her married boss. Even he fancies her present self and wants to be with her. However, it’s Maddalena’s distorted view of not being enough that stops her from realising.
Initially, I expected the film to be another cliche where the lead would start changing things about her and suddenly the world would be falling to her feet. Instead, it presents a rather comforting and realistic message that you might be perfect as you are. There isn’t always a need to drastically change yourself to fit into the ‘ideal beauty standards’ and mould yourself the way others are. Rather, one should try to embrace each part of themselves and hold their heads high. A reminder that many might need to hear in today’s filtered world.
Overall, it’s an entertaining watch with relatable characters and important lessons. Diana Del Bufalo does a wonderful job of making us empathise with the character and presenting a friendly personality that everyone would want to be friends with. Using Valentina Nappi as herself is definitely a unique choice but also helps in normalising taboo subjects. Many times, the chemistry between Maddalena and Vale was much more enjoyable to watch than with the male leads.
