Physical 100 Season 2 Finale Review

In the previous episodes, the contestants were divided into teams and competed against each other. The losing teams were then given one last chance to survive by sticking to a pillar till the end. Jung Ji-hyun was able to survive among everyone and was asked to choose 4 other people to save and make a team with. He chose Amotti, Le Jang-jun, Kim Jee-hyuk, and Kim Min-su, who were often referred to as the ‘Avengers team’. With 6 teams remaining, the next quest was ‘Team Delegate’, where they had to move a certain amount of heavily weighted sacks in a relay and in the second part, they had to kick the sacks while hanging on the monkey bar.

Two teams were eliminated at the end of the quest, including Won-hee’s team and Kim Dong-hyun’s team. The remaining 4 teams expected more team quests but they didn’t expect ‘Intrateam Survival Match’. The contestants had to compete with their teammates to move further in the show, as only one member would survive per team. The quest tested their endurance with the roller race. The contestants had to move two 150 kg rollers through a course and run back to the starting point. The game would go on until only one member of the team remained.

After various rounds, only Hong Beom-seok, Justin Harvey, Andre Jin and Amotti were left from each team. The other contestants had to destroy their torso after getting eliminated from the show. The first challenge for the top four contestants was to save their torso from falling down, as it was hanged from a rope and carrying 40% weight of the individual contestants. They had to hold onto the rope until at least one was eliminated. This quest was also seen in the last season and though it seems easy, holding on tires the contestants quite easily.

While everyone started to struggle after some minutes, Justin Harvey was particularly having a difficult time as his arms were about to give up. Not being able to carry the weight anymore, the rope slipped through his palms and his torso fell to the ground. With his elimination, Hong Beom-seok, Andre Jin and Amotti excelled to the top 3 positions in Physical 100 Season 2.

The final quest for the top 3 contestants was called ‘Infinite Squat’. Each person had to do squats while carrying a bar on their shoulder, which was attached to a container filled with coal. Initially, 100 kg of coal was filled in each container and the contestants were made to do 30 squats. When nobody tapped out, more coal was added in the subsequent rounds with an increasing number of squats. Ultimately, Andre Jin was unable to carry 250 kg weight as his legs gave out. Thus, he was eliminated from the show.

The last quest of Physical 100 Season 2 – Underground between Amotti and Hong Beom-seok was called ‘Pole Pushing’. They were made to stand at the two ends of a long pole and by using their strength, they had to knock off a metal pillar in front of them. Whosoever would knock the pillar at least 2 times out of 3 rounds would win the show. Having shown immense growth as a returnee, many eliminated contestants anticipated Hong Beom-seok’s victory. Since he had been consistent in each game, enduring everything with strength and grit.

Meanwhile, Amotti was brought back after almost getting eliminated and had given his best in each quest, securing the top spot in the show. While the Infinite squat challenge was comparatively an easy challenge for him since he is used to it in his daily exercise routine. But he seemed to have loosened some strength and grip in the pole pushing. Despite putting all force, Amotti wasn’t able to budge Hong Beom-seok and lost the first round to him.

After analysing the pros and cons of the arena they were in, Amotti decided to change his strategy and started the second round with full gusto from the start. Not giving Beom-seok a moment to gather energy, he kept on pushing with all the strength he had. While Beom-seok looked much stronger initially, he soon lost his balance, giving Amotti the chance to beat him. Not only once but the rest of the rounds were won by him. Therefore, making Amotti the winner of Physical 100 Season 2 – Underground.

Final Thoughts: Although the latest season was much better than the last one, with no unnecessary drama or made-up rivalry, the show felt a bit scripted towards the end. While they claim to be looking for the ‘perfect physique’ regardless of age, gender or nationality, it doesn’t seem to be the actual case. In the end, two natives and two South Koreans residing foreigners were left. And it’s generally seen in other survival shows that people of other nationalities would never win, even if they are the most popular. Similarly, the way Justin and Andre tapped out of the competition in the end moment, makes one feel suspicious.

They had shown extraordinary strength in all the previous quests, carrying tons of weight by any means. Suddenly, Andre isn’t able to hold 250 Kg weight and Justin lets the rope slip through so easily, within a few minutes of the challenge. No one can prove any foul play definitely and thus, hope that it wasn’t really the case. Also, it’s quite saddening to see none of the women making it to finals at least. Moreover, they are not even seen as a competition by their male counterparts but rather as filler contestants who will go home soon enough. Apart from it all, Amotti definitely is a deserving winner who has shown exemplary performance throughout.

Physical 100 Season 2 – Underground is available for streaming on Netflix.
