Netflix’s description of the film reads: Through revealing interviews with experts and victims’ families, this gripping documentary examines the problem of deadly foodborne illness in the US. A shocking indictment of the food industry and its regulators, it exposes how decades of apathy and malfeasance have left the American food supply and its consumers vulnerable to deadly pathogens like E. Coli O157 and Salmonella.
Poisoned The Dirty Truth About Your Food Review
The documentary starts with Bill Marler pointing out the packaged products in a supermarket which have been the cause of illness in its consumers. And with his ongoing list, even the director starts to wonder if anything that we consume in our daily lives is completely safe, or if it will send us to the emergency room in a second. Like the E. Coli O157 outbreak in 1992-93 from Jack in the Box hamburgers that killed at least 4 children and infected a hundred others.
It is considered a pivotal point in the meat products supply chain that changed how it was handled and regulated to control the contamination of such bacterial pathogens. While the actions taken at that time helped in curbing further outbreaks, it didn’t stop them from spreading to other products like spinach and lettuce. Within every few years, we get the news of contaminated pathogens in some products at the cost of human ill-health.
Despite many instances of the bacteria spreading to leafy products or unhygienic practices during packaging that led to foodborne diseases, the authorities don’t seem much concerned with making the changes. As seen in the documentary as well, where Sandra Eskin (USDA), and Frank Yiannas (FDA) were just trying to deflect the questions and sounded like an AI that doesn’t have sufficient data to complete your request.

The documentary sheds light on how careless livestock handling is one of the main causes of the life-threatening bacteria’s mass spreading. The creators majorly pressurise on having stricter regulations in the food system and briefly mention how the product packaging and supply chain are negligent in taking all the preventive measures. But they missed out on one more facet, which is the handling of food in restaurants and fast food chains. As it also contributes to many cases of foodborne diseases.
Overall, it’s an alarming film and creates awareness about the issues related to the food we consume. It’s unlikely that it will become the leading face of change in the industry but on an individual level, one can adopt the safety rules imparted by the Food safety experts. And most importantly, cook your food properly.
