Risque Business Taiwan Review: Shin Dong-youp and Sung Si-kyung’s Sensually Educating Adventure

Risque Business Taiwan

Risque Business Taiwan is a South Korean travel reality talk show, released on Netflix on August 29, 2023. It was created by Studio Modak and produced by Go Min-gu. Executive produced by Jeong Hyo-min, Kim In-sik and Im Ju-hyeon and Yoon Shin-hye is credited as a writer. The show consists of 5 episodes with a runtime of about 30-46 minutes.

The show, Risqué Business features comedian Shin Dong-youp and singer Sung Si-kyung, where the two Korean stars meet and explore people from the unknown world of adult entertainment. Previously, they travelled through Japan and got to know more about their adult industry and this time they travelled to Taiwan and explored some intimate topics.

The show takes off with a bold start as the hosts attend and explore Taiwan Adult Expo, and talk with the founders, attendees and performers to find out what makes the event a one-of-a-kind. There they first-hand experience how AV (adult video) entertainers have kind of an upgraded meet and greet with their fans. Instead of just taking pictures and getting autographs, the entertainers even make their special requests come true, like getting whipped on the private parts or role-playing some romantic scenes, even unhooking bras.

One could sense curiosity and shying hesitancy among the hosts, who hadn’t experienced anything like a man paying to role-play as a dog with their favourite AV star etc. in broad daylight. Knowing their work on South Korean television, one would expect them to make fun of the things they are not used to or vehemently compare it with their own country. For a change, they didn’t comment much on things even if they didn’t approve and respected other people’s choices.

Each episode had a theme, in the second episode they met with gay and lesbian couples to know how their life has been since the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2019. They also explored Ximending, Taipei’s LGBT+ district and witnessed how a queer couple is no different from a hetero one. In the third episode, they visited JKF Magazine to meet Jiu Jiu and learn about her experience of working as an erotic model. It was somewhat hilarious to see how hosts didn’t know where to look and behave in front of lingerie-clad models.

The fourth episode seemed right up Shin Dong-youp’s alley as the duo sat down for Dr. Gracie’s Special Lecture on Sex. He had some good advice on the issues that the other attendees had, while Sung Si-kyung looked like he was learning some new tips that he could use in his personal life. The last episode was all about the modern dating scene in the country and the perspective of the youth.

They met five young Taiwanese men and women to talk about contemporary attitudes toward dating, relationships and sex. Although it was a fun episode, it felt a bit generalised and didn’t really give an overview of the overall dating scene. And surely, many Taiwanese viewers might differ with the views of the group and how they look at love and sex.

Overall, it’s a fairly entertaining show which also educates the viewers on different subjects. Especially, for someone from a very conservative society, the show could give a new perspective towards the subject of love, sex, dating etc. Or even comfort someone by showing that their way of life is accepted and nothing to be ashamed of.
