The Devil’s Plan Finale (Episodes 10-12) Review
In episode 10, the contestants add more amount by winning in the Prize match and increase it to 250 million won. At the same time in prison, Si-won and Seok-jin are able to open up the hidden door by putting in the password in the safe lock. The door opened up to a hidden underground room where only one player could play the game with the devil to win big or go home. After much consideration, Si-won decides to give it a chance at night, so that Seok-jin could play the next morning.
The game was a strategy board game for two players, where they had to form a line and was called ‘Blind Five in a row’. Added difficulty was that both player’s pieces will be of the same colour, even if they change the colour in the middle, the opponent will also change to the same. In order to win, they had to remember the placement of their pieces and make a line of 5 before the other person. While Si-won was playing well, she ended up losing the game & was sent home then and there only, without letting her even say goodbye.
Seok-jin waited for her outside the game room but eventually went back with tears when he realised that she might not come back at all. This elimination also motivated him to find a way to win the game since he had caught a glance at the board. He gave it a try after a sleepless night and was able to outsmart the devil in the game. He received 10 pieces as the prize, along with another piece for solving the ring puzzle. In total, he had 13 pieces, more than anybody else in the game.
The last Main match of the show was – Equation High Low. It was similar to the poker high-low split game, where the contestants had to bet on 1 or 20 in each round. Instead of poker cards, they were given numbers and mathematical sign cards, using which they had to make the equation whose sum would be closer to their bet number (1 or 20). The pot in each round was divided to the closest high & low better in each round. They were given chips according to the number of pieces they had & if they lost all the chips, they would be directly eliminated from the show.
Seok-jin had the biggest advantage since he had the maximum number of chips and could play freely, while also increasing the pot amount to eliminate others. As rounds progressed, Park Kyeong-rim was the first one to get eliminated followed by Seung-kwan, Yu-min and Joon-bin. Orbit came very close to losing all his chips many times but was able to win back with his strategies. Ultimately, the match ended with Dong-joo, Orbit and Seok-jin as the remaining contestants.
The last prize match increased the stakes by announcing that the lowest scorer would be eliminated if they lost any of the rounds. They all had to individually play the game against a guest professional player – Kim Sa-rang. Each person was assigned different coloured blocks in each round and they had to form a line of three to win by blocking others or stacking strategically on the board.
Even though the contestants had planned to win all four rounds so the trio could survive together, one single mistake sent one of the members back home. Although they were able to block the guest player’s moves collectively in the first three rounds, in the last round, Orbit made a wrong move which cost Dong-joo since Orbit & Seok-jin had won the prior rounds.
The Finale – Who Won The Devil’s Plan?
For the final match between The Devil’s Plan finalists – Orbit (Gye-do) and Ha Seok-jin, all the contestants of the show were welcomed back to the house to cheer upon them. The reunion made everyone reflect on the eventful week that they just spent together and wished for the best person to win. The last match consisted of three games in total – Nine Men’s Morris, Hexagon and Dice Game.
Nine Men’s Morris was even provided to them in the house and coincidentally, the two finalists had even played the game last night. They were given 3 rounds to win the ancient strategy board game. They had to place their pieces on the board, form lines or rows of 3, and leave their opponent either with 2 pieces or 0 pieces by taking each one away. Every time the opponent makes a line of three, they could take away one piece of the other person. Thus a winner is decided when the other player has no pieces left to make a line.
In the first round, Orbit was able to outsmart Seok-jin by blocking his moves. However, it made Seok-jin change his game plan and he ended up winning the other two rounds. It did make Orbit a bit anxious but he still had a chance to win the show if he won the next two games. Moving on to the next game called ‘Hexagon’ which required good memory and arithmetic skills. The contestants were shown a hexagon where each block contained a number and they had to remember its placement.
Then they were shown another picture of the hexagon but the numbers were replaced by letters of the English alphabet. They were given a target number like 6, 8, 10 etc and by calling out a horizontal or vertical line of letters (like ABC, PLM, ZXC) whose sum would be equal to the target, they would win a point. There were a total of 10 rounds and they could win numerous points in each round by guessing the right sequence. However, they would get a minus point if they were incorrect
Ha Seok-jin played it smartly and pressed the buzzer quickly to answer before he forgot and wouldn’t say anything if he was confused. The round would get over if nobody pressed the buzzer in 90 seconds. By playing like this he was able to collect more points and sustain them, while Orbit tried to guess various times and ended up with minus points due to incorrect answers. Eventually, as the game concluded, Ha Seok-jin had more points than Orbit and having already won the last game, he became the ultimate winner of the show.
Actor Ha Seok-jin won The Devil’s Game season 1 by showing his commendable skills, wit and strategy in each game. Instead of following the majority, he always focused on himself and proved his mettle eventually.
The Devil’s Plan is available for streaming on Netflix.
