The Village Ending Explained
Yu works at the waste disposal site, with no hopes or dreams about his life. He is bullied by his peers, especially Toru and even looked down upon by the villagers because of what his father did. He was opposed to building the disposal plant near the village and ended up killing some people who wanted to build it, despite the hazardous consequences the people would have to face. Ultimately, he lit his house on fire and killed himself. However, Yu is also considered a criminal like his father and he keeps on taking it all with his head laying low.
However, when his childhood friend Misaki comes back to town from Tokyo, she can’t stop but to help him regain his will to live a proper life. She starts working at the plant’s PR department & tries to indulge him in different activities like becoming a tour guide for people visiting the site. At first, he is hesitant but gradually gathers enough courage to do something different. This helps him find some meaning in his life & spend his days happily with his friend and now lover Misaki. But Toru becomes jealous of the attention given to Yu, with his TV appearance & other people admiring him.
He plans to break them up by showing Misaki a video of Yu covering the hazardous medical waste, late at night. It is illegal to dispose of such waste so casually without required treatment and is administered by Toru himself, thus Misaki doesn’t falter by the video. Seeing how she is still taking Yu’s side, he forces himself on her. This while, Yu happens to call her & when he hears Toru’s voice, he rushes to get home. He pushes Toru away and they end up fighting. However, Yu still finds it difficult to stand up against Toru & is almost beaten to death by him.

However, it’s not revealed how the fight ends but the next day, Yu & Misaki are back to work, as if nothing happened. Toru is said to be missing but things are going well due to the TV segment on the disposal plant & tourists flock to see the site and meet tour guide Yu. He has become kind of a hero in everyone’s eyes & even looks the best version of himself. Taking inspiration from him, Keiichi also starts working at the plant and accidentally finds the Infectious waste box, while working.
He researches it and after realising that it shouldn’t be dumped there, he reaches out to Kokichi Ohashi. The police catch them at night while dumping the waste again and arrest everyone. Yu is called on the spot, as he is put in charge in Toru’s absence but he denies even knowing about it. They are then forced to thank Keiichi for his responsible work and distance themselves from the illegal work. Mr Ohashi and Yu expected the matter to go away soon but Toru’s body is found by the police while digging for more hazardous waste. This makes Yu & Misaki anxious & she decides to confess to killing Toru but he stops her.
Along with Toru’s body, they also find his phone in which all the videos of Yu dumping the illegal waste and Toru forcing himself on Misaki are there. Meanwhile, Yu visits plant owner Mr Ohashi to tell him about everything. Strangely, he is completely fine despite finding out his son’s murdered body, as he was sick of covering up his misdeeds. After knowing how Misaki stabbed Toru when he was beating Yu, Mr Ohashi asks him to blame it all on her & save his name. Yu has become a representative of the village and because of him the village is booming again, thus he wants to keep on using him for profit.
After listening to how Mr Ohashi is so calm and has it all planned, he questions if his father’s death was a similar case as well. Was he made a scapegoat so that the disposal plant could be constructed without any issues? But when Mr Ohashi laughs at his question & says that he doesn’t even remember, Yu loses it & chokes his neck. He then lights the house on fire, and the flames burn dead Mr Ohashi & his bed-ridden mother’s body. On the way out, he is stopped by Officer Kokichi, who can’t believe that Yu did the same thing as his father. Meanwhile, Yu is smiling with tears in his eyes & the film ends here.
It is not revealed if he gets arrested for his crimes or what happens to Misaki, but one can predict that all the crimes might have been blamed on him. Thus, Yu fails to get out of the vicious fate that haunted him his whole life. Towards the end, it’s shown that the village goes back to its eerie calmness, with Keiichi leaving the place for good.
