The Witcher Season 3 Part 2 Review
At the end of Volume 1, Geralt and Yennefer realise that it was Vilgefortz, not Stregobor who was corrupting portals and making half-elven girls believe that they were Ciri. But before they could act on it, everyone is captured by Djikstra and Philippa. Simultaenously, Cahir and the Scoia’tael also invade Aretuza to find Ciri. Despite being betrayed, Tissia gathers other mages to protect their home but loses many in the brutal fight.
As a last resort, she decides to use Alzur’s Thunder, a deadly spell that drains the life force of its caster. It’s effective for the time being but the damage had been done. Seeing all this, Yennefer comes to the other mages’ rescue, leaving Geralt and Ciri to escape. But as it’s shown in the trailer as well, the Witcher is not able to withstand Vilgefortz’s power and is badly injured. Meanwhile, Cirilla runs to Tor Lara and gets transported to the deserts of Korath as a mysterious power engulfs her. This also destroys the magic tower that makes Aretuza a special place for mages.
For the most part, Ciri is shown trying to find her way back from the endless desert, while being confronted by her deepest fears and ghosts of the past. It’s unclear what really happens to Vilgefortz when he chases after her in Tor Lara but every character is now scattered in places, trying to fend for their lives. Towards the end, we do get a glimpse of him in Emhyr’s court but completely disfigured.

In Part 1, Ciri was being trained to source and control her power and in Part 2, she has got her hands on the kind of power that makes her the most powerful. Does she know how to effectively use it is still a looming question but something has definitely changed for her. Either she has accepted the dark side like Falka or hiding her cards for the right moment. The biggest change has to be in Geralt’s stance who preferred to take no sides but now, he won’t be on the fence and will do anything to find Ciri back.
Volume 2 also marks the end of Henry Cavill’s role as The Witcher and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth. It will be interesting to see how the creators will show the transition if there will be a change in the story or if we will just have to accept the reality. Either way, it will be quite big shoes to fill. The ending of the show hints that Yennefer will be taking Tissia’s position in uniting the mages and helping Geralt. Although it’s unclear that Emhyr knows if he has an imposter Ciri, set up by Vilgefortz. If we look at the books then he doesn’t but it will help turn the war in his favour.
In the next season, we can expect Francesca & Fringilla to emerge as a new power with united Elves and Scoia’tael. Also, now that Radovid is the new king of Redania, there are bound to be a shift and will be interesting to see which side he picks. And Geralt, Jaskier and Milva on their way to Ciri, probably to Nilfgaard.
