Who Is Erin Carter? Review

The series introduces us to a woman and a child, who are running away from someplace in the UK through illegal means. We then enter their lives after five years when they are living in Barcelona, Spain and have created a good life for themselves. Erin Carter is a substitute teacher looking to bag the full-time position and her daughter Harper is yet adjusting herself in her school. However, it becomes more challenging due to her eye disease, which could potentially blind her.

After being kicked out of a musical for punching a boy who was making fun of Harper, they make a stop at a supermarket which changes their days ahead. It becomes a ground for armed robbery and seeing her daughter in danger, Erin ends up tackling a gun-wielding robber and accidentally kills him. However, the police become suspicious of her identity as the CCTV footage shows how she effortlessly unarms the man and is able to stab him like someone trained to do that.

As she tries to avoid attracting attention amidst police questioning and press for her heroic actions, Erin grows intent on keeping herself hidden from the spotlight — but that proves difficult. As more dangerous people come out of the woodwork, Erin’s lethal defence skills draw out questions that she’s not prepared to answer.

For someone wanting to keep a low profile, she surely is quite hot-headed and ready to take on anybody, be it a bitchy neighbour, and always lands in trouble. It takes at least 4 episodes to get some bits of information about Erin’s real identity and it doesn’t really make much sense. Imagine being expelled from a school for just punching someone’s nose. Well, that’s exactly how Erin finds herself trudging along the road of danger and crime.

And since leaving the past behind, she has been running away being overly protective of her daughter, while also suffocating her with – ‘I’m doing this because I love you and to protect you’. But never gives a simple answer of protecting her from what exactly? Make up some lie at least, so the daughter’s character doesn’t become like the whiny bratty kid who would deliberately put their parent in trouble and then apologise with crocodile tears.

It’s a typical action thriller where the creators hint that the lead actor has done some terrible things in the past, which they are running away from. But it turns out that they weren’t exactly the ‘bad guy’ and were doing the best they could to protect an innocent. Also, they never die, no matter what happens or even if they get shot terribly, they can still fight a dozen with no pain in the eyes.

Looking at Erin’s character, her main motivation to keep on going comes from her saviour complex. Where a person who comes from a bad background but gets fixated on saving others, even if it harms them. Like all their sins are absolved if they do this one thing right. Overall, it’s a fairly engaging series with decent action and storyline. What doesn’t hold up in the series is the little details and characters with limited range that are hard to empathise or even relate with. And we never even get to know who Erin Carter really is.
