Does Kyung-ja avenges her son’s death or not, let’s find out in Mask Girl Ending Explained. The South Korean thriller drama is based on a Webtoon of the same name by Mae-mi. It is written and directed by Kim Yong-hoon. It has 7 episodes with a runtime of about 50-60 minutes.

The cast of the series includes Lee Han-byeol as Kim Mo-mi, Nana aka Im Jin-ah as Kim Mo-mi (after surgery), Go Hyun-jung as Prisoner Kim Mo-mi, Ahn Jae-hong as Ju Oh-nam, Yeom Hye-ran as Kim Kyung-ja, Park Jung-hwa as Lee A-reum, Choi Daniel as Manager Park Gi-hun, Lee Jun-young as Bu-yong and others.

Plot: As a kid, Kim Mo-mi dreamed of becoming a dancer. However, her appearance —because it didn’t align with society’s impossible beauty standards — hindered her aspirations. Now it’s 2009, and Mo-mi works at a mundane office job where she battles her insecurities while harbouring an insatiable crush on her manager, Mr Park.

At night, Mo-mi attempts to reclaim her childhood dream by moonlighting as a masked camgirl dubbed Mask Girl, who captivates her growing audience with seductive dance routines. But after a rough night of drinking her feelings, Mo-mi’s fate becomes forever entwined with that of her co-worker, Ju Oh-Nam — causing her to change her identity and run away to escape herself and the bodies she’s left behind.

After killing Ju Oh-nam, Mo-mi runs away to another city since the police was also looking for her and start living as A-reum, with a new face. She works in a hosting bar, where she can freely sing and dance on the stage, while the customers revel in her beauty. On the other hand, Kyung-ja is hell-bent on finding her and even buys a gun from the black market. She had saved quite a lot of money in all these years and with the help of it, she first learns how to use the computer and acquaints herself with the Internet lingo.

She joins the pages who are also obsessed with finding the ‘Mask Girl’ and from the information that she gathers, she goes out to look for Mo-mi there. That’s when she comes across a girl who goes by the name Mi-ae and looks similar to the masked girl. What makes Kyung-ja sure about her being Mo-mi is the half-moon necklace that Mo-mi wore in her broadcasts. Kyung-ja abducts her while pretending to be a taxi driver and takes her to a stranded church to shoot her dead. But the girl claims to be Kim Chun-ae instead and even she holds a grudge against Mo-mi.

Chun-ae explains how Mo-mi adopted A-reum as her new name and started working at her bar. However, took over Chun-ae’s clients and even gave her an attitude, which made her harbour a grudge against A-reum. She just happened to wear the moon necklace that she found on the floor and also shares other things about her life as a kid and then getting plastic surgery after overhearing her crush bashing her looks. Believing in her story, Kyung-ja lets her go and seeks her help to track down Mo-mi.

Little did she know that Chun-ae fabricated the part about being A-reum’s rival. In reality, she was good friends with her, to the extent that she revealed everything about killing Ju Oh-nam as well. She warns Mo-mi about Kyung-ja and tells her to run away. Meanwhile, she had been living with her crush Bu-yong as she reconnected with him after the plastic surgery. After hearing how he used her as a bank account and never even regarded her as a friend, she exposed him for underage drinking and smoking in school which brings his idol career crashing down.

Just when Chun-ae had begged for her life to Kyung-ja, Bu-yong also gets to know that she was the one who posted his exposing pictures on the internet. In a rage, he beats her up and thus, she plans to run away with Mo-mi. However, she gets caught on her way out and gets dragged brutally by him. Mo-mi had to come to her rescue and they end up killing him. They stuff his body in a suitcase and drive off to a secluded location. Simultaenously, Kyung-ja gets information from the fan page that Chun-ae and Mo-mi are together and follow their car.

While confronting them with the gun, she ends up shooting Chun-ae and Mo-mi tries to tackle her. To help her friend, Chun-ae gathers her strength and hits Kyung-ja’s head. At last, Mo-mi puts everything in Kyung-ja’s car and pushes it into the water. Earlier during the car ride, Mo-mi had revealed that she was pregnant with Oh-nam’s kid and soon after we see her dropping her daughter, Mi-mo at her maternal home.

What Happens to Mo-mi and Mi-mo?

After dropping Mi-mo, Mo-mi doesn’t come back for her but gets arrested by the police and is given life imprisonment. While Mi-mo grows up under the care of her grandmother and is quite curious about her mother. One day, the rumour about her being Mask Girl’s daughter gets revealed to everyone and it haunts her everywhere, even if she changes schools or moves to another city. She transfers to another school after having a violent fight with a kid and makes friends with Ye-chun there. She is also an outcast but tries to find similarities between the two, to remain friends.

However, the rumour catches up at the new school again and it makes her suspicious of Ye-chun, since only she knew about it and they have a fallout. In the prison, Mo-mi does things her own way and even if someone tries to mess with her, she quickly shows that she is not someone that will get bent in front of them. When the warden changes to a devout religious follower, she somehow finds herself inclining towards the religion and becomes a model prisoner.

Does Kyung-ja Take Her Revenge?

Although Mo-mi had pushed Kyung-ja into the water, putting her inside the car, she survives by shooting the window and escaping quickly. Since Bu-yong and Chun-ae’s bodies were found in her car, she became the lead suspect and had to get plastic surgery to conceal her identity. She searches for Mo-mi everywhere and when sees her on the news, she diverts her attention to her daughter Mi-mo. By running a snack truck near Mi-mo’s school, she befriends her and gives her the motherly love that she seeks from her grandmother but can’t get.

However, Kyung-ja had an ulterior plan. She was the one who would spread the rumours about Mi-mo, making life hell and then console her as her ally. She hadn’t really thought of killing Mi-mo, but when she sees how Mo-mi has found solace in god and living a rather peaceful life, she wants her to suffer the same pain of losing her child. After making Mi-mo fall out with Ye-chun and her grandmother, she invites her home with open arms. Kyung-ja had already revealed her brutal plan to Mo-mi, making her anxious and wanting to escape from prison.

She had already volunteered to give her kidney to one of the prisoner’s families and goes along with the plan to get a chance to go out. In the hospital, she escapes from the window and tries to gather information from her mother. On the other hand, the Grandmother was also getting worried about Mi-mo not coming home and seeks information about the older lady, whom Mi-mo was close to. Just then, Ye-chun knocks at her door and raises concerns about the snack truck lady being dangerous for Mi-mo.

On the way to Kyung-ja’s house, Mo-mi is able to call her mother and tell her that Kyung-ja is actually Ju Oh-nam’s mother and wants to harm Mi-mo. Even though the grandmother sends the police officer beforehand, he doesn’t find anything as there was a hidden underground basement, where Mi-mo was tied up. Kyung-ja had planned to kill Mi-mo by burning the coal briquette in a closed place and capturing it all on camera to send to Mo-mi.

The grandmother and Ye-chun arrive at her home just when Kyung-ja was getting out of the basement. While trying to tackle Kyung-ja, the grandmother gets injured badly but Mo-mi also reaches there on time. She hits Kyung-ja on her head, making her pass out and helps Mi-mo to get out of the basement. However, Kyung-ja yet survives and stabs the grandmother with the knife and comes looking for others. Mo-mi tries to hold her off and instructs her daughter to run away.

By the time they come out of the house, the police also reached there, looking for an escaped prisoner, Mo-mi. Yet again, Kyung-ja emerges from the house with her rifle and points at Mi-mo. As soon as she fires the rifle, the police shoot her down and Mo-mi saves her daughter by taking the shot instead. It marks the end of the years-long vengeance, along with her own life.

In the end, Mi-mo becomes an orphan as all of her family members are dead. On the bright side, Ye-chun’s parents become her guardians for the time being and she goes back to school again. After witnessing how her mother gave her life to save Mi-mo, her grudges against her mother also goes away and she cherishes the good memories of Mo-mi, recorded on the tapes by her grandmother.
