Siren Survive the Island Review: Created by Lee Eun-kyung and produced by Ko Min-gu, it is a South Korean reality survival show produced by Studio Modak for Netflix. The show is set on a remote island where 24 female contestants, versed in the highest levels of both combat and strategy, fiercely compete in six teams divided by profession.

There are 6 teams in total – Police officers, Firefighters, Bodyguards, Soldiers, Athletes and Stunt actors. Each team consists of four members, including one leader. Through a series of challenges, their mental and physical strengths will be pushed to the limits of endurance and the last team standing will take the winner title.

Rules: All the teams will be living on the deserted island called Island of Fire for 7 days, where they will be facing various challenges and battles for survival. Every day one Arena battle and a base battle will happen. In the Arena battle, the teams will compete against each other to win a special benefit that could help them in the Base battle.

The base battle is mainly to get your hands on the hidden flag of the other team. For this, they will have to make strategies to attack their opponent’s base house while also guarding their own. The team that acquires all the other 5 base houses will be declared the ultimate winner and the flag-losing team will leave the show instantly. However, the siren for the base battle can go off at any odd hour, thus they have to be on their toes all the time.

As soon as the teams reached the island, they were welcomed with a race where they had to cross the flat mud to reach the pointed flags. Once all the members of the team crossed the mud, they were tasked with taking the 60kg flag pole to the Arena battle area and mounting it there. In the order that they reached the arena, they were asked to choose the base house of their choice.

Each base was located at different places on the island and they had to be wise enough to choose a base that would be hard to attack & easy to defend. The choices included a square house, a wood cabin, a boathouse, a tree house, a cliff tent and a shelter deep in the woods. On top of it, they were only given one ziplock each to take the stuff that would fit into it. Though there were no other battles on the first day, they were instructed that once the base battle siren blows, they will have to get into their combat clothes and get ready for battle.

Each day, they were asked to hide the group flag at a new location in their base and apart from it, they had an individual flag as well, which if taken out meant the person also got eliminated from that round. Even though it was the first night, the teams were quick enough to get a sense of the area and base locations. From spying, and collecting secret intel to making alliances, each team was coming up with tactics to win and defend. And it worked for some, as the first base battle siren was blown right at dawn.

One team got eliminated in less than a day and was sent back home, while the remaining ones sighed with relief for another day. But to prepare again for the next battle, they competed in a laborious challenge in the Arena battle to win the special benefit. Since they are already spending many calories by moving around here and there, they can use these calories as currency to buy food or useful tools like knives or shovels.

Final Thoughts: Siren Survive the Island Review (Episodes 1-5)

Another recent survival show Physical 100 became a bit boring and repetitive soon but the latest show is quite interesting to watch and instantly hooks you. Along with the team, the viewers also find themselves coming up with the best ways to defend and who to attack. Personally hoping for the Firefighter team to win, as they seem to be a well-knit group with a friendly yet strong bond. While the soldiers are definitely on top of the game as they are used to making survival strategies in their daily lives but like the Police team, they seem to have a lot of pride which makes them overconfident. Thus, they could end up losing or in a difficult situation due to any small mistake.

Rating: 4/5
