The Heartbreak Agency Review

Maria’s agency is the perfect medicine for those who are heartbroken. The jilted, the cheated-on, and the rebounds all come to her seeking help. As a previously heartbroken person and a single mom, she understands the pain of heartbreak and has dedicated herself to helping others overcome it. However, things take a turn when she advises one of her clients to end her relationship with a commitment-phobic journalist named Karl. After the client follows Maria’s advice and breaks up with Karl, he becomes angry and wants to get back at Maria by exposing her as a heartbreak fraud.

In terms of storyline, it isn’t something absolutely new. We all have seen the tropes where one lead who doesn’t believe in ‘true love’ or something similar and falls head over heels with someone, who is a master in it. But what makes Heartbreak Agency, intriguing to watch is the relatability. Firstly, you might relate to the anguish feelings or Karl – if someone broke up with you on a third person’s advice. At the same time, you might also believe in healing & therapy, like Maria.

The first half when Karl acts like a maniac man child doesn’t leave a good impression. Since for the most part, his views are quite misogynistic and that’s a surprise because it’s made by an all female crew. But as he starts to change or see the perspective from the other side, it’s hilarious and heartwarming to watch. And that would have been a great end to the story if only… they didn’t show some stupid reason for his bitterness towards love or just women.

Just because some girl rejected him in high school, he became such a hateful man is lousy explanation for his bitter personality. Either it should have been some traumatic experience, maybe even typical parent’s separation that distorted his view on love & relationships could have saved the film. Or no reason at all, like many contemporary men, he grew up imbibing the toxic popular culture on how a man should be like. That would have given the film a spot on the list of movies to watch on Valentine’s day perhaps.

But if you look at it, Karl’s character is just a man-child who can’t accept rejection. Even when he is about to lose his job, his only way of survival is to beg to his boss, to take him back. The therapy doesn’t do much to him. He wasn’t even heartbroken since he considered most of his relationships as sexual ones. There’s no exact healing, he just got to know a woman on a deeper level, after a long time and got wrapped around the idea of being with her.

Fairly, the film has its moments that are entertaining as well as endearing to watch. However, in some ways it projects how Maria is a hypocrite as well. It’s easy for her to preach about things that everyone should ideally do. But in reality she is a closed off person with no idea how to navigate through her own relationships or take her own advice. If Karl had mentioned Maria’s behaviour to some other love therapist, they would have recommended a break-up with Maria as well. So in a sense, Karl and Maria are quite similar but with contrasting view on love.

If the creators intent was to show how a man like Karl can even be healed, then they failed miserably. However, if they wanted to show how Maria is just a fox in sheep’s costume, whose facade is challenged by Karl, then that certainly came through. Both of the characters are hiding behind masks to avoid being vulnerable. And if you like watching films with flawed characters then The Heartbreak Agency might be one of a decent choice.

Rating: 3/5
